How to Wear a Garter Belt So It Stays Up

Garter belt hardware and fabric: a suspender clip, satin elastic strap, embroidered mesh and a stocking welt

A garter belt is worn on the waist or high hip with the knickers over the top, the front clips fastened to the stockings first and the back clips second, and the straps set so the stocking is held taut but not pulled. Put it on in that order and it stays up all evening. Put the knickers on first, or clip the back before the front, and it will slip, twist or need a visit to the bathroom that involves undressing.

Most people who say a garter belt would not stay up have worn one exactly once, with the straps too loose and the belt sitting on the wrong part of the body. It is a garment with a small number of rules, and the rules are easy. Here they are, in the order you get dressed.

The Order of Dressing

Step What to do Why it matters
1. Belt first Fasten it at the natural waist or high hip, snug enough that it does not shift when you sit Everything else hangs from this; if it moves, the stockings move
2. Stockings on Roll each one up the leg to the thigh, welt smooth and level A twisted welt pulls one strap harder than the other
3. Front clips Sit down, clip the front strap on each leg into the welt, stand up Front sets the length; you can see and reach it
4. Back clips Reach behind and clip the back strap on each leg, slightly higher than the front Back straps take the strain when you sit and bend
5. Adjust Set each strap so the stocking is taut with a little give; sit and stand once to test Too loose slips, too tight tears the welt or bows the leg
6. Knickers last Over the belt and straps, not under So the belt need never come off before the end of the night

The last step is the one people get wrong most often and the one that decides whether the garment is practical. Knickers over the straps means everything from the waist down can be dealt with without unclipping a single stocking. Knickers under the straps looks tidier in a photograph and is unbearable by the second hour.

How to Set the Straps

Each strap has a slider. Set the front pair first so that the stocking welt sits smooth and the strap runs straight down the front of the thigh with no slack. Then set the back pair one notch shorter than the front, because the back straps stretch when you sit and the front ones do not. The test is to sit down, cross your legs, stand up, and look: if the welt has dropped or the strap has gone slack, shorten it. If the welt is pulled into a point or the stocking has laddered at the clip, lengthen it. Straps should hold the stocking taut with about a finger of give under the clip. Most belts come with four straps; six straps hold more evenly and are worth it for sheer stockings that ladder easily, but four set well beats six set badly.

Where the Belt Sits

A classic garter belt sits at the natural waist, the narrowest point above the hips, where it has the most to grip. A lower style sits on the high hip. Neither is wrong, but the belt should be fastened where it was cut to sit, and it should be snug: if you can slide a hand under it flat, it is too loose and will ride down as the straps pull on it. A belt that is too tight will roll. Sizing by waist measurement rather than dress size, and using the tightest comfortable hook, solves most of this. Our guide to lingerie sizing covers how to take the measurement.

Belt, Bodice or Frame

The straps do not have to hang from a belt. The Fine Print Garter Set is cut as a longline bodice with the suspender straps built into its hem, so the whole thing anchors across the ribcage and waist rather than on a narrow band, and it comes with the stockings already in the box. That is the most forgiving version for a first wear, because a bodice cannot ride down. The Full Bloom Embroidered Set takes the opposite approach: an underwired bra, a thong and a separate strappy garter frame in embroidered mesh with gold-tone hardware, where the frame sits on the hip and the clips wait for stockings of your own. A boned piece like the Backbone Bustier sits between the two: it has no straps of its own, but a separate belt worn beneath it stays put against the boning. How those constructions hold is explained in bandeau versus bralette versus bustier.

Choosing Stockings

Stockings for a garter belt have a plain welt, a deeper band of thicker knit at the top, and no silicone. Hold-ups with a silicone band are a different product and do not need a belt, and their band is often too thick for a clip. Sheer stockings ladder at the clip if the strap is set too tight; a slightly heavier denier lasts longer for everyday wear. Clip the metal or rubber button of the clip through the welt itself, not through the sheer leg below it, which is where most ladders start. If the set includes stockings, as the Fine Print does, they are sized and welted to suit its clips.

Wearing It Under Clothes

Under a dress or a skirt, a garter belt is invisible if the straps lie flat and the clips sit on the thigh rather than the hip. Under trousers it prints, and is best kept for skirts. Sit and stand once in front of a mirror before you leave, and check that the clips are not visible through fine fabric at the front of the thigh; if they are, move the front straps slightly outward. And at the end of the night, unclip before you undress, wash the belt by hand as the care label directs, and keep the clips away from anything sheer in the wash. Our note on reading care label symbols covers the rest. Everything with clips or a garter frame is in lingerie sets.

FAQ

Do you wear underwear over or under a garter belt?

Over. The belt goes on first, then the stockings and clips, then the knickers over the straps. That way the belt never has to come off during the evening.

Why does my garter belt keep slipping down?

Usually because the belt is too loose at the waist, the straps are too tight and pulling it down, or it is worn on the hip when it was cut for the waist. Fasten it snug at the point it was designed to sit, then set the straps so the stocking is taut with a finger of give.

Should the front or back straps be tighter?

The back straps should be one notch shorter than the front. The back takes the strain when you sit and bend, and a strap that is level with the front will go slack the moment you sit down.

Can you wear hold-ups with a garter belt?

You can, but there is no need. Hold-ups have a silicone band that keeps them up on their own, and the band is often too thick for a clip. Garter belts are for stockings with a plain welt and no silicone.

How many straps should a garter belt have?

Four is standard and enough for most stockings. Six holds the welt more evenly and reduces laddering with very sheer stockings. A bodice with built-in straps is the most forgiving option, because it cannot ride down.
